Three weeks ago, the Oakleaf Women of Impact community came together to explore capability versus capacity. We were fortunate to have Jonathan Hook from CHX Performance challenge our thinking, particularly around capacity – what it truly means and how it affects us in the workplace.

The discussion covered a broad range of scenarios, but a key focus was on the physical reactions our bodies have when we are operating at low capacity—and the knock-on effect on our performance. We explored practical ways to create environments that help ease this impact and bring us back to a more regulated state. This is especially relevant for organisations with highly purpose-driven employees, high-performance cultures, or those navigating change and uncertainty.

A key takeaway from Jonathan was that while individuals must take responsibility for recognising and managing their own capacity, leaders play a crucial role too. Understanding team members on an individual level ensures they are set up for high performance rather than burnout.

For me, the biggest reminder was simple: we are human. Our emotional and physical states affect our work more than we sometimes acknowledge. Taking time to understand our own capacity—and the environments that help us perform at our best—is essential.

Given the success of this event, we’re hosting another in April. If you’re interested in joining the conversation, do get in touch.
